How do you see Ductal® solving the challenges for bridge owners?
Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) Ductal® is a very versatile and durable material with wide ranging application potential in bridge construction. UHPC will work very well for bridge deck applications due to its high strength and durability characteristics. It is also capable of making the deck significantly lighter thereby improving the efficiency and economy of long span bridges. Lighter superstructure will also make seismic design of bridges simpler and construction less expensive.
In addition to bridge girders, substructure elements and foundation elements also can utilize the advance material properties of UHPC.
Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) Ductal® is particularly suited for field cast joints between precast components due its high bond strength and high durability.
Light weight and the ability to resist handling and erection stresses makes UHPC an excellent material choice for precast bridge components. Its potential in this area has not yet been fully realized. This material is well suited for a more centralized bridge component manufacturing and will lower the overall carbon foot print of bridge construction.
UHPC is particularly suited for field cast joints between precast components due its high bond strength and high durability. Precast concrete bridge construction will usher in an era of faster on site construction which will reduce user inconvenience during rehabilitation or reconstruction. Use of this technology will increase, as more and more owners and bridge designers become familiar with this technology.
Use of UHPC in the area of rehabilitation of deteriorated bridges and strengthening of bridges are just in the budding stages. Use of UHPC in these areas are destined to accelerate as more Engineers become familiar with the material and necessary code provisions become available.
