Ornans infant school (France): Light and shadows at the infant school
Ornans résille

Nature, games, spontaneity, softness; childhood values can be applied to all types of creativity. Such an example is the Ornans nursery school in Doubs, France, imagined by Architectes Associés Duncan Lewis and Yvan Loizeau and completed in partnership with Jousselin Préfabrication.

"The architects were looking for a way to use very thin mesh work forms on a façade mostly made of aluminum-frame picture windows," explains CEO Jean-Yves Jousselin.

"The architects wanted to play on the decorative effect of a thin skin of panels on the facade, interspersed with a multitude of leaf-shape inlays and perforations - 7 different forms and up to 100 inlays for the densest panels. The inlaid panels create light and shade effects in the classrooms. On a technical level, the designers had previously considered a thin GCC (glass/cement composite) panel solution. But these panels would have required the use of peripheral stiffeners, which would lend little to the aesthetic result and increase the weight of the elements. The mechanical properties of Ductal® enabled us to propose pieces only 3 cm thick without surrounding supports. "

"The 21 pieces (1.55 m x 3.60 m for some and 4.6 m x 5.6 m for others) were mounted using 4 very discrete attachment points, to create a poetic façade that diffuses a very soothing interior atmosphere. To complete the wrinkled surface aspect, the architects wanted to bring a final touch of fossilized leaves that we achieved after testing several prototypes."
