In 1951, the Delaware Memorial Bridge was opened to traffic allowing commuters to navigate over the Delaware River on a 3,650 ft (1,112 m) long state-of-the-art suspension bridge. The structure is a twin suspension bridge crossing the Delaware River. This roadway is a major artery which carries I-295 from New Jersey to Delaware. This is a toll road where any rehabilitation to the roadway is a major disturbance to traffic and toll collection.

The challenge was to provide a durable riding surface on the deteriorated bridge deck within a minimum time window in order to provide the least amount of traffic disturbance. Ductal® Overlay was selected as the solution of choice to supply the overlay riding surface. The existing deck had many areas of severe deterioration which were exposed during the hydrodemolition process.

Challenge

69 years later, structural engineers, project managers, material experts, builders, concrete finishers and many more key players combined forces to accomplish a partial-depth deck rehabilitation pilot project on the New Jersey bound span which consisted of removing deteriorated concrete from the existing deck and replacing it with a layer of Ductal® fiber-reinforced Ultra-High Performance Concrete. This efficient bridge preservation and rehabilitation strategy prevented costly full-depth repairs while providing the structure with a durable, impervious overlay topping.
