At LafargeHolcim, a global leader in building materials and solutions, we started asking ourselves hard questions about the sustainability of concrete over 25 years ago. Having already spearheaded the transition towards low-carbon construction and led the way to promoting circular economy (from alternative fuel use to our research into concrete recycling), developing solutions that allowed architects, engineers, contractors and owners to design and build greener projects was only natural. Because concrete does have good fundamentals: it’s durable, resistant, adaptable, versatile. It is by dialling up these properties and adding new ones that we reduced concrete’s negative impact on the environment.

 

Homogeneity: By limiting the aggregate size and sand dosage, we improve the paste properties to get a modulus close to aggregates and provide enough paste around the aggregates to reduce self-restrained shrinkage. Compactness: Ductal® is formulated using advanced granular packing theory with well selected granular classes and well selected high-quality raw materials combined with very low W/C (0.15-0.35) and the use of mid- to high-range superplascizers. Ductility: Ductal® uses well selected high-strength microfibers, resulting in non-brittle material in compression and deflection, as well as hardening to tensile hardening properties, depending on the application.

01 - Improve

 

One of the first things we did was to find a revolutionary way to make less with more: our ultra high mechanical performances and very low transport properties, combined with the partial or full replacement of rebars by micro steel fibers, enable us to design structures with one-third to half of the usual amount of material for equivalent functionality. And, whether shotcreted or poured on-site or even in precast form, it’s easy to see how the reduction of material usage reduces carbon emissions from manufacturing to transportation.

02 - Use Less, Get More

 

Ductal®’s new application techniques such as refined spraying methods and 3-D printing allow to get the right amount of product in just the right sections. Bring innovative designs to life with nearly zero waste of material while reducing mould waste. Slender load-bearing structures and thinner facades help achieve more density in all sorts of projects, not to mention better climate control of indoor spaces. Improved durability and resistance are also built in, meaning longer life cycles for buildings and infrastructure works, with none or minimum maintenance. Ductal®’s exceptional durability takes its roots in its improved packing density, which reduces overall porosity combined with very low water to cement ratio. This translates into very low transfer properties, making it almost impermeable to any common aggressive agent.
